An Artist's Journey: Legacy of Canadian Japanese Internment
This CBC documentary functions as a threshold. It follows my artistic process centered around the history of Japanese Canadians. It is a gateway — a Japanese torii gate representing not only my immediate family but any family or persons that has had to face dispossession and reclaim agency — it is an accessible visual diary translated for a contemporary global perspective.
To be in front of the lens and be vulnerable was a risk, but it was important because it would become a communal story to be held with care and trust.
The memory of this documentary will reach far beyond my expectations and that has tremendous potential for generations to come.
The art exhibition, "Brave Against the Current" held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre speaks to honouring the brave collective spirit within the Japanese Canadian community. One of the works, "Though We Were Separated, We Slept Under the Same Stars" is a luminous imaginative response to a relationship to self and interconnectivity.
